A beautiful hill station Kalimpong is located between Siliguri and Gangtok in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. The word Kalimpong literally means the ‘Land of kings’. It is well known for its majestic Himalayas, thick forests, lovely meadows, amazing valleys and pleasant weather. It is also one of the amazing flower producing centers of India. Back in the 18th century Kalimpong was under the rule of Sikkim rulers. Later it was taken over by Bhutan and then in the 19th century British established their rule over it. The reflection of the British can still be seen in the architecture.
Major attractions of Kalimpong
Thongsa Gompa
It is a popular Bhutanese Monastery built by the erstwhile Bhutan king in 1692. It reflects the cultural heritage of Kalimpong. One of its highlights is the mask dance ceremony which is held during festive occasions.
Tharpa Choeling Gompa
It is a beautiful monastery belonging to the Gelukpa sect (Yellow Hat) of Tibetan Buddhism, the same sect to which the present Dalai Lama belongs. It was built on Tirpai Hill in 1937. It houses the idols of the Bhaisajya, Sakyamuni and Maitreya Buddhas (past/present and future form of Buddha). One of the striking attractions of the monastery is the hall adorned with the images of flayed animals and humans.
Samco Ropeway
Ideally set over the popular rivers Relli and Teesta, Samco Ropeway is a 120 feet high ropeway. It is surrounded with greenery.
Flower Nurseries
At Kalimpong you can explore several flower nurseries where you will find wonderful flowers like amaryllis, lilies, anthuriums, roses, gerbera, dahlias and cacti.
Teesta Bazaar
It is one place where you can shop till you drop. It is a famous market of Kalimpong where you can buy a range of wonderful handicrafts like wood carvings, woolen garments, copper and silver ware, thanks (a special painting made on silk with embroidery), tea leaves, bags jewellery, artifacts etc.
How to reach
Bagdogra is the nearest airport (around 80 km) from Kalimpong. It is also well connected with by rail and road to the major cities of West Bengal.
