Onam is synonymous with Kerala and is celebrated with loads of joy and enthusiasm. It’s a ten day long festival which is celebrated in the month of August or September, in the beginning of the month of Chingam (the first month of Malayalam Calender). It is celebrated in honour of the legendary King Mahabali , the ancient ruler of Kerala under whose rule people were happy.
During the festival people wear new clothes, clean and decorate their houses, make rangolis, young members take blessings from the elders of the family and perform various interesting traditions. People perform pujas in the temple early morning. After the rituals and traditions are done people enjoy lavish feast encompassing around twenty one types of dishes including the famous sweet payasam. Other interesting activities associated with the festival are elephant carnival, boat race, music, dance, firework etc.
